Welcome to Verde (“Green”) Cottage

A little cottage in the treetops

Tucked into the rainforest high on Bordeaux Mountain, down a stairway fringed with palms and tree orchids, our newly remodeled 650-square-foot cottage is your peaceful, private island hideaway for up to four guests.

Two air-conditioned Queen bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen and a wraparound screen porch with hammock swings make it easy to slow down. It’s made for active travelers, nature lovers, couples and small families who want to spend their days out exploring St. John and their evenings listening to the tree frogs.

Slow down and soak in the beauty of St. John.

The heart of the cottage

It’s all about the porch

Start the day in a hammock swing with your coffee and the hummingbirds. Linger over dinner al fresco under the string lights. Then watch the clouds turn pink over the treetops as the coqui frogs start to sing.

  • Macramé hammock swings
  • Dining table for four
  • Cozy lounge seating
  • Rainforest and water views

Getting to the cottage

The path less traveled

Park in our private lot, then follow 67 well-lit steps down through the rainforest to your own little corner of St. John. No neighbor or road in sight, just the breeze in the trees.

It’s a long (long!) climb back up, so Verde is best for active travelers who don’t mind a few stairs. Pack light, and leave the beach chairs at home: ours are waiting in the beach gear chest by the parking area.

Policies & booking details →
How do I get to Verde Cottage?

Fly into St. Thomas (STT), then take the ferry from Red Hook or Crown Bay to Cruz Bay. From the ferry dock, Verde Cottage is about a 20-minute drive up Bordeaux Mountain.

Do I need a rental car?

You’ll need a car on St. John, so reserve one as soon as your dates are set. The road up is paved except for the last flat stretch to our parking area, so you won’t need 4WD to reach us. Remember, we drive on the LEFT!

Is parking available?

Yes. Your own private parking area has room for two vehicles, right at the top of the stairs.

How many stairs are there?

The cottage sits below the parking area, down a long (long!) stairway of 67 well-lit steps. It’s part of the magic, and it’s best suited to active travelers who don’t mind a climb.

How is the cottage laid out?

The main bedroom opens off the screen porch. The loft bedroom is up a steep, narrow staircase and enclosed by railings, so it isn’t recommended for young children.

What about power, water and Wi-Fi?

Verde shares Vela Vista’s 48 solar panels and six Tesla Powerwalls, which provide backup power during island outages. Rainwater is collected and triple-filtered for household use, and Starlink Wi-Fi helps you stay connected.

Is beach gear provided?

Yes. Beach chairs, an umbrella and a cooler are waiting in the beach gear chest by the parking area, and beach towels are yours to use too.

What is the weather like on the mountain?

At about 1,100 feet, evenings are cooler, so pack a light layer. You’ll share the mountain with lizards, hummingbirds and, after dark, a chorus of tiny tree frogs.
